RCM Studios
The Royal College of Music Studio is a professional classical recording studio, maintained and run by qualified recording engineers. The original studio was founded by composer Tristram Carey in 1967 and was the first electronic studio at any UK academic institution. It inspired a generation of composers to experiment with electroacoustic music, a theme that continues at the RCM to this day.
Today we provide a wide range of professional-quality services and facilities for the College community, including classical music recording, video production, web streaming, audio-visual research and development, and provision of specialist facilities for screen composers. In addition to our core work within the College, RCM Studios offers a commercial service to clients including major broadcasters, record companies and leading international soloists.
The studio complex is located directly under the RCM Concert Hall and consists of a medium sized live room (the Belle Shenkman Studio) with its own Steinway Model D grand piano, three control rooms linked to performance spaces around the campus, and three rooms for composition, production and
editing. The college employs three recording engineers, one of whom also manages the studios with the support of the Digital Production Coordinator, and a videographer. The core team is supported by a number of freelance engineers and specialists as required.
The RCM Studios are always in high demand from commercial clients and our staff work across the UK on a range of commercial projects each year. The resulting income is re-invested to help maintain and develop the studio facilities for the benefit of our students.
