The Royal College of Music (RCM) has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2025 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) London Awards, a testament to its stunning redevelopment by John Simpson Architects.
John Nahar, RIBA’s regional director for London, highlighted that each shortlisted project “not only improves the physical environment but also enhances the quality of life for all of us who live, work, and study here.”
Following a £40 million transformation, the RCM now boasts exceptional new spaces, including the Performance Hall and Performance Studio, expanded practice facilities, the beautifully designed Museum, and The 1851 Courtyard and RCM Café.
At the heart of this redevelopment is the light-filled Cotes-Burgan Atrium, where the historic external red-brick walls and stained-glass windows of the original Sir Arthur Blomfield design are preserved and showcased within the contemporary design.
With this RIBA nomination, RCM’s world-renowned reputation continues—not just for musical excellence, but for architectural brilliance too. Stay tuned; the regional winners are announced in spring 2025!
