Almost 40 years after it was opened, the Royal College of Music’s spectacular Britten Theatre has seen a stunning seating refurbishment, replacing all audience seating to improve comfort levels and sight lines. Completed in time for the autumn term 2023, the seats have been put to the test with various events and have exceeded expectations. Designed by Sir Hugh Casson, the Britten Theatre was opened by the late Queen in 1986 and its 400 original ‘Hilly Horizon’ conventional folding theatre chairs had been in use for over 35 years. One of the RCM’s most prestigious venues, the theatre not only provides an intimate setting for a variety of performances but also accommodates conferences, lectures, product launches and other events, making it a versatile space for hire.
The RCM partnered with Audience Systems, specialist suppliers to venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Sydney Opera House, to find a replacement that complements the building’s interior and heritage, while providing the comforts of a 21st century design. Made in a two-tone red fabric in keeping with the original look of the theatre, the new chairs are designed to be durable comfortable, as well having as a soft closing mechanism.
The refurbishment has also improved the sight lines from designated wheelchair user seats, ensuring that every guest gets the best possible experience. A new balustrade, curtains and LED floor lighting increase visibility for audiences.
